Module offered in Sociology 219 \u201cGlobalization and Contemporary Chinese Society\u201d\u00a0Module Duration: Two weeks (two 80 minute classes per week)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction\/Overview<\/strong><br \/>\nChina currently has about 300 million migrant workers who migrate from their rural homes to urban cities.\u00a0 During the two weeks of class, students will explore: what it is like to be a migrant worker in China; why people become migrant workers; and what kinds of challenges they face and why.\u00a0 The activities require the students to understand human aspects of the backbone of China\u2019s economic development.\u00a0 Students will read articles on: 1) the <em>Hukou<\/em> system and 2) labor standards in factories.\u00a0 Students will also watch two documentaries: 1) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/pov\/lasttrainhome\/\"><em>Last Train Home<\/em><\/a> and 2) <a href=\"http:\/\/icarusfilms.com\/if-dec\"><em>Decent Factory<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 They are expected to complete a film work sheet for the first film and to write a memo on the global production network based on the second film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals and Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals: To be able to understand the link between physical and social mobility.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe specific learning objectives for this unit are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will compare and contrast purposes and consequences of China\u2019s Hukou system (Household registration) during the pre-reform (before 1978) and post-reform (after 1978) eras.<\/li>\n<li>Students will assess a few Hukou reform policies and discuss solutions.<\/li>\n<li>Students will write a memo on the global production network, including the goals of major players (Nokia, German and Chinese management staff in a German\/Chinese factory in China, and factory workers).<\/li>\n<li>Students will make connections between themselves as consumers and Chinese factory workers as producers\/laborers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Schedule, Readings and Expectations <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<table width=\"437\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"77\">Week 1<\/p>\n<p>1.1<\/td>\n<td width=\"360\">Labor, Migration, and the <em>Hukou <\/em>System<br \/>\n-In-Class Film: \u201cLast Train Home\u201d (87 minutes)<br \/>\n&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/challengingborders.wooster.edu\/teach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/08\/Matsuzawa-Assignment-Film-WorkSheet.pdf\">Hand out Film WorkSheet<\/a><br \/>\n-Reading: Wang, Fei Lei. &#8220;Conflict, Resistance and the Transformation of the Hukou System&#8221; in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanlab.org\/articles\/China\/culture\/Perry%20eds.%202000%20-%20chinese%20society,%20change,%20conflit,%20resistance.pdf#page=80\">Chinese Society: Change Conflict and Resistance<\/a>.
